Commercial refrigerators are larger than residential refrigerators and usually run at a cooler temperature. Because of the needs of the restaurant or other business these refrigerators are exposed to much more wear and tear as well. It is important to keep your unit well maintained to avoid costlier repairs or replacements down the line. When you do face repair needs, some of them are simple and you may be able to do yourself. That being said anything that you aren’t sure of should be left up to a professional.

Here are some of the most common commercial refrigerator problems and fixes for them.

Power

If your commercial refrigerator unit is turning off and you cannot figure out why here are some things you can check. The first option is obvious, check to see if your unit has a power switch and if it does make sure it is turned on.

Another common problem is the power cord being loose in the outlet or fully unplugged from something being pushed against it. Check to make sure the plug is properly inserted into the outlet.

If both of the above are not the issue, you should check to make sure the outlet you are plugging into has power. You can do this by using a voltage detector. If this is the issue you can check your breaker box to make sure the breaker hasn’t tripped.

One of the less common issues you may run into is the cord being frayed or having a short. You’ll want to call a professional for the job if this is the case.

If none of the above issues are the cause of your power issues, you should call someone who handles Commercial Walk-In Freezer Installation and Repair to diagnose the problem.

Compressors

Compressors are a vital part of your commercial refrigerators functioning. Most manufacturers detail in their manuals how often you should clean/service your compressor. Ensure your unit has been cleaned and is working properly.

Fans

Your commercial refrigerator fans may stop working from wear and tear or from frost buildup. If it is from frost the easiest solution is to let the refrigerator warm up enough for the frost to melt and then ensure the temperature and defrost cycle are at their appropriate settings.

Lighting

Most of the time this repair is very simple. You just need to find the proper bulb recommended by the refrigerator brand and replace it. Sometimes there will be an issue with the switch or another electrical issue that calls for professional help.

Ice Buildup

Many commercial refrigerators have a defrost cycle that is meant to eliminate ice buildup. Sometimes this cycle isn’t set properly which can lead to excess frost and condensation. Make sure the cycle is set up according to manufacture specifications.

Drain Blockage

Commercial refrigerator drains can become blocked from debris from everyday operations of the restaurant. If you are seeing a buildup of frost or condensation in the pan you should ensure that the drain line is clear of obstructions.
